Cigarette Makers Tailored Menthol Levels to Attract Young Smokers

MedPage Today, July 18 -- Tobacco companies adjusted menthol levels in cigarettes to get adolescents hooked, according to researchers who examined internal marketing documents.
Cigarette makers added just a touch of the cool, minty additive to temper the taste and harshness of the cigarette, making an early smoking experience more pleasant, reported Jennifer Kreslake, M.P.H., of the Harvard School of Public Health, and colleagues, in the September issue of the American Journal of Public Health.
