November Is Lung Month -
Meet Saskatchewan Lung Researchers

This Lung Month, The Lung Association asks all Canadians to take a moment to think about each one of their 22,000 daily breaths and acknowledge the researchers who devote their lifes work so everyone can breathe easy.

Research matters because everyone should be able to breathe. Whether it’s a chronic disease that takes your breath away, an allergy or a cold, we all know that breathing is important. Breathing is something we all do every day and it is something that we all deserve to do with ease. Despite its importance and the fact that 1 in 5 Canadians live with lung disease, lung health research is still grossly underfunded in Canada.

Saskatchewan is home to many world class researchers who work relentlessly to create a future where everyone can breathe with ease.

It is our pleasure to introduce them to you.

Dr. Darryl Adamko

Dr. Adamko is a pediatric respirologist who is researching biomarkers of airway disease. In collaboration with researchers at the University of Saskatchewan, he is developing a new test that could diagnose airway diseases more accurately by using a urine sample.

Dr. Brian Graham

Dr. Graham is a world leader in pulmonary function testing. He is a biomedical engineer and previous CEO of The Lung Association, SK. He has a passion and strong determination to improve the health and quality of life of people suffering from lung disease.

Dr. Vernon Hoeppner

Dr. Hoeppner is a respirologist who has been a leader in tuberculosis (TB) research for close to 40 years. He pioneered directly observed therapy (DOT) for SK patients with TB and TB infection - the first jurisdiction in North America to provide this service. He continues to focus his research efforts on TB treatment and improvement of care.

Dr. Josh Lawson

Dr. Lawson is a researcher at the Canadian Centre for Health and Safety in Agriculture and the College of Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan. He is studying how air quality and urban or rural locations impact children's asthma and is committed to helping children breathe easier.

Dr. Darcy Marcinuik

Dr. Marciniuk is a respirologist with international acclaim for his knowledge and leadership in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) management. His research is always seeking ways to better manage COPD and improve the quality of life for patients.

Dr. Erika Penz

Dr. Penz is a respirologist who is studying the survival and healthcare use of patients with lung cancer in Saskatchewan. Her research has been able to highlight both the personal and societal burden that lung cancer has placed on the people in our province. Her ultimate hope is that this research will improve care for patients.

Dr. Anderson Tyan

Dr. Tyan is a respirologist who is dedicated to improving lung cancer outcomes. He is working to incorporate minimally invasive diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to patients with lung diseases. He is able reach patients across Saskatchewan through the Telehealth Lung Cancer Study, a service provided to remotely assess patients with suspected lung cancer through videoconferencing.

Breathing as One -
Boehringer Ingelheim Canada COPD Catalyst Grant

The Breathing as One - Boehringer Ingelheim Canada COPD Catalyst Grant competition promotes innovative research related to the treatment/quality of life, mechanism of disease, and health care services for COPD.

The total amount available for this funding opportunity is $60,000. The maximum amount per grant is $30,000 for one year and the funding is non-renewable.
